The story behind Death by Disguise

Q&A with author Helen Goltz about the second book in the Jesse Clarke series, Death by Disguise (as featured on AusRom Today)

What inspired this book?
I took a flight from Brisbane to Melbourne and sat next to a young woman going to Comic Con. I kid you not, she talked the entire flight about her costume, dressing up, who she has met at other Comic Cons and so on—which brought murder to mind… just kidding. But by the time I landed, I decided to make P.I. Jesse’s next investigation about an incident at Comic Con. Of course, Jesse and her boyfriend Dominic were happy to dress up, for all the wrong reasons.

Who are the main characters and why will we love them?
The main characters are publicist and part-time private investigator Jesse Clarke and her gorgeous boyfriend and personal trainer Dominic. There’s also a bit of unrequited love for Jesse from police officer Jason Abingdon too. You have to love Jesse because she’s got quite a mouth, she’s ambitious and independent, but her gorgeous boyfriend Dominic is always trying to protect her and keep her out of trouble. That man deserves an award.

What’s coming up next for you?
So many stories, so little time. I’m keen to get back to writing the next Mitchell Parker book—my vulnerable and sexy FBI agent. But I’m at proofing stage with a paranormal romance—“The Clairvoyant’s Glasses”—which is a new genre for me. Jesse and Dominic have two stories currently out, but I won’t get to tell their story again until next year now. Thanks for asking.

Out now. Sassy private investigator Jesse Clarke’s personal trainer boyfriend, Dominic, wants her to give up the P.I. business and return to her publicity clients. She’s beginning to think he might be right!

It was no normal week—two dead people are spotted alive but their death certificates say otherwise, Spiderman steals a collection of costumes made for the next Comic Con, and Batman drops in to warn Jesse that all is not as it seems.

Supported by her own man of steel Dominic, business partner Ed, police contact Officer Jason who has more than a professional interest in Jesse, and best friend Melanie, Jesse finds herself talking to witches, superheroes and morticians to solve her two cases and looking behind the disguises for answers.
