I can’t kill a main character

I know, call me soft, but I hate when a main character dies. When Matthew Reilly killed of a certain character (no spoiler alert necessary) who was close to Scarecrow, I was upset, okay angry. I can’t bear it. I don’t want to be in pain, I don’t want to read about characters in pain. I don’t want my handsome, lead action man, Mitchell Parker (“Mastermind“, “Graveyard of the Atlantic“) to undergo any more trauma than the usual fighting the baddies and having compulsory counselling thrust upon him.

None of my characters are going to die in my books unless they are:

  1. Aged and on the way out anyway
  2. I introduced them to die. You know, like they did in Star Trek when they would beam to a new planet with a few crew members that none of us had seen before. Just like that.

In my latest book in the Mitchell Parker Series, “The Fourth Reich”, I demoted a character for one book, but I’ve bought her back – I know, Samantha got the better of me.

What do you think? Can you hack it when a character is killed off?
