Description
The novel assembles a diverse cast of characters, each of whom interacts with the landscape to find healing and hope. There is Alice, a widow in search of a new life; Simon a dwarf and renowned landscape photographer; Christian a young shearer driven to self-hatred; Lois, an Anangu health worker, and Bob a refugee from tragedy in Melbourne. There are farmers and shearers, a controversial Catholic bishop, unique outback characters, politicians, and always the landscape itself, a central character in the novel. Against its background many themes in contemporary Australian life are explored.
